The id Tech 1, or Doom engine, was a 2.5D first person engine written by John D. Carmack of id Software for the seminal commercial 1993 first-person shooter Doom. The engine was then later used in many commercial titles such as Heretic, Hexen and Strife. The engine code, specifically of the Linux version of Doom, was released under the GNU General Public License in 1999. Since then many source ports of the id Tech 1 games have been made such as PrBoom enhancing the engine and allowing it to be more platform independent. Hence id Tech 1 now comes in many different forms.
