Veloren is an open world, open-source multiplayer voxel RPG inspired by Cube World, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dwarf Fortress, and Minecraft, written in Rust.[1] Its development began on May 28th, 2018 and is currently in pre-alpha. It is playable and content is being added all the time.[2][3]

Veloren will feature a procedurally generated world with complex interactions between NPCs creating a vivid world simulation.[4]

Development[edit]

Development began on May 28th, 2018.[5] The project roughly follows a three month release cycle where each "stable" release serves more as a milestone than a stable version.[3] Communication for the project takes place on the Veloren Discord server.[6] Development is broken into different working groups.[6] A smaller group of core developers has the final say on what is included in the game and a group of admins moderates the community. Team leads organize the work within each group.[6]

History[edit]

Veloren was created when Joshua Barretto[7](AKA Zesterer) created a post on the Cube World subreddit about creating a clone.[8] Many people were dissatisfied with the slow progress of Cube World and a Discord server was made the same day.[6]

Anti-Feature[edit]

The official server harvests global chat through a Discord relay without informing users or asking for their consent. In order to opt out, players must host their own server. The main server updates on a nightly basis so this takes extra work to replicate.
