Stellar Crisis is a free game. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well. |
Stellar Crisis is the web's first complete multi-player strategy game. Players from all over the world compete to build megalithic galactic empires, develop powerful new technologies, and fight pitched battles in far away star systems. It is free, absolutely and positively. It also comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
Three stellar crisis servers remain. Two servers run the php code. The third runs Almonaster, a different implementation of the game.
Originally developed as a tech demo, Stellar Crisis attracted thousands of players in the mid '90s. After briefly going defunct, the game was released into the public domain. Development continued under the GPL. The original perl code was converted to pike. The pike source code is available here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/sc-original/ Unfortunately, no servers are currently running the pike code.
The PHP code was developed in the early 2000s. It was originally run on the (now defunct) Iceberg server. Homeserve was started as a replacement. The PHP source code is available here: https://github.com/robotjonboy/stellarcrisisphp
Almonaster source code is available here: https://github.com/mfeingol/almonaster. Though this repository has no license file, the code is licensed under the GPL per https://falcon.almonaster.net/
Rocket Empires has held the Stellar Crisis Open Championship annually since 2011. More information is available on the tournament homepage.
