Space Nerds In Space is a free game. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well. |
Space Nerds In Space (SNIS) is a multi player space simulation by Stephen M Cameron and is a inspired by Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator.[6]
Gameplay[edit]
The game is multiplayer, with players managing one or more stations of a space ship and is intended[7] to be played in the same room.
The available consoles with vector graphics are weapons, navigation, engineering, damage control, communications, and science.
Other roles in the game is the the role of captain, who does not need to monitor a console. One player can be assigned the role similar to that of a game master and will have access to a game master station showing the demon screen. From here the game master can inject objects into the game, control NPC ships, or run Lua scripts.
There is also a big screen showing the view outside the spaceship in 3D graphics.
SNIS ships look and function broadly similar to those of Star Trek. Warp gates allow travel between planetary systems.[7]
SNIS differs from both EmptyEpsilon and Artemis Spaceship Bridge by having a 3D star chart/map rather than playing on a 2D plane.[8] Also, SNIS seems to invest considerable time into 3D rendered models.[8]
Some available mission scenarios are "Saving Planet Erph" and "Space Pox".
Development[edit]
Cameron opted for vector graphics to allow for easy scaling to any resolution and easy porting. When Cameron started the project, he was initially hoping to get someone else to implement the 3D graphics.
Druring development, Cameron was looking for a laid-back cinematic and orchestral score and used recordings of Johannes Brahms's and Gustav Mahler's music from the music repository Musopen.
Media[edit]
In September 2013, a short documentary about the game was published. It contains segments of gameplay and interviews with the main developer Stephen M Cameron as well as interviews with players and a short demonstration of Cameron's previous game Word War vi.[9]
