FreeDink is a free game. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well. |
Dink Smallwood is an adventure/role-playing game, similar to Zelda (2D top view), made by RTsoft. The game features the twisted adventure of young Dink Smallwood, a pig farmer who leaves his town and goes on a quest to save the world.
GNU FreeDink is a new and portable version of the game engine, which runs the original game as well as its D-Mods, with close compatibility, under multiple platforms. It also comes with the DFArc front-end to manage and play Dink Modules (or D-Mods for short): fans-made new add-ons - some of them bigger than the original game. And if you want to make your own adventure, the FreeDinkedit game editor awaits you.
Gameplay[edit]
As in any other RPGs the player collects items, improves stats (attack, defense and magic) and solves quests. The world has a few villages and towns, dungeons, many various monsters and NPCs to talk to. Secrets, such as hidden dungeons, are also to be discovered. There are also adventure elements in the game, requiring the player to find ways to cleverly use key items in order to progress. The player can level up through gaining experience by killing monsters and can equip various types of weapons such as swords and bows, even though there is no armor – the inventory and equipping system is fairly simple.
The game is full of satirical humor and adult jokes as a contrast to classical RPGs with serious tone. The player is allowed to use weapons anywhere and attack anyone, to which most NPCs have unique response lines. Dink is not a typical hero – his character is in many ways spoled, he can talk to people in rude ways, be very immodest and so on – but always in a humorous way, for which he remains likeable. Funny dialog options are almost always available.
Controls are very simple and only use the keyboard. The game can be saved at checkpoints throughout the world into several save slots, which is very helpful as the game ends as soon as the player dies. Once the main quest is finished, the game remains playable, similarly to modern RPGs.

Game media[edit]
The freedink-data package contains an alternate version of the original game data: most of it was released under the zlib license and hence reused, except for sounds and music that RTSoft couldn't release as free software. Replacements are being made.[1]
Translations[edit]
The game story is translated in Danish, German, Spanish, French, Macedonian and Dutch. The game engine and front-end are translated in a dozen of languages.
