FLARE is a free engine. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well. |
FLARE is the Free/Libre Action Roleplaying Engine.[1] As the name suggests, it's a game engine for action RPGs, not a game itself. FLARE can be installed in order to run games based on FLARE.
Currently, the main game for FLARE is Flare: Empyrean Campaign.
Engine[edit]
FLARE is an engine for one particular type of RPG: Singleplayer action RPGs from a isometric perspective (2.5D). It features many classic RPG mechanics: Attributes, skill levels, experience levels, abilities, mana, dialog systems, and so on.
In order to play games in FLARE, you need to download what the FLARE developers call “mods” (which can actually be full-blown games or a literal modification of an existing one). In the main menu you can enable or disable mods at will.
Games for FLARE[edit]
The main game for FLARE is Flare: Empyrean Campaign.
On [1] you can find more games, but as of June 2019, these are still incomplete or otherwise not (yet) noteworthy. We might eventually write more articles in this wiki if new games for FLARE pop into existence.
Videos[edit]
Youtube has a gameplay video here.
Name[edit]
The project was originally named OSARE, but moved away from the moniker "open source" as Richard Stallman's precondition for support.[2]
