Godot Engine is a free engine. This means that the source code is available to be studied, modified, and distributed. Most projects look for help with testing, documentation, graphics, etc., as well.

Godot is a community-driven visual game development system originally developed by Juan Linietsky and Ariel Manzur, with many community contributors. It supports 2D games and 3D games.[2] It is released under the MIT license.[1]

Godot uses a scene-based system for its engine. There are four tabs in the editor: a 2D scene editor, a 3D scene editor, a script editor, and a documentation center. A scene is made of nodes, and every node can be given its own script.

  • The source code was publicly released in February of 2014.[3]
  • Version 1.0 was released on December 15th, 2014.[4]
