Unable to auto confirm account

I see a couple people have simply added themselves to this section and apparently subsequently get a confirmation. I received no emails (that I could find), but am hesitant to "me too" in this section.

I realize there have been spam issues, but is this literally how new users get group membership, or is something now broken? --Wolcen (talk) 18:58, 15 October 2021 (CEST)
